What is an organic product?

What is an organic product? Food labeled with the USDA Organic contain 95-100% organic ingredients and have been inspected to organic standards outlined by the USDA National Organic Program. If a product has the USDA Organic on package, then that product is organic.

The products labeled as “Made with Organic ingredients” contain up to 70% organic ingredients and do not have the USDA organic on package, because they fall below the 95% organic ingredient standard.
– Organically produced foods must be produced without the use of synthetic fertilizers, genetic engineering, sewage sludge or irradiation
– Organic foods are free from artificial preservatives.
– Organic growers and handlers must be certified by third-party agencies, state or private, or other organizations that are accredited by the USDA.

Grocery supermarkets that offer organic foods: Kroger, Albertsons, Sprouts Farmers Market – great selection of organic products at affordable prices, Safeway, Target, Walmart, and more.

Standards for certified organic products:

– Organic crops: No – Irradiation, sewage sludge, synthetic fertilizers, prohibited pesticides and genetically modified organisms
– Organic livestock: No antibiotics or growth hormones, 100% organic feed, and must provide animals with access to the outdoors.
– Organic multi-ingredient foods: must contain 95% or more certified organic content.
